Kyoto is a city located in the central part of Honshu island. Having been the imperial capital of Japan for 11 centuries (from 794 till 1868), Kyoto features a rich architectural heritage of about 2000 Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines. The ´Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto` have been nominated by the UNESCO as World Heritage Sites.
