black & white previews
All colour images are also available as black & white prints. The b&w previews offered here are produced by simply desaturating the image via Javascript. The result is a neutral b&w preview which may appear flat or too dark/bright. Before printing, however, each image is individually assessed and adjusted for best contrast, tonal quality, and dynamic range.

Derwish dancers at the Mevlevi convent in Galata
Derwish dancers at the Mevlevi convent in Galata
The Derwish are part of the Sufi, a member of an ascetic-religious Muslim order. The ecstatic trance dance (sema), in which the performers rapidly and very elegently revolve around their vertical axis for several minutes is practised in the Mevlevi Order. It is seen as a physical method to enter a state of religious ecstasy (majdhb, fana) which allows communication with Allah.
